As a vehement ProChoicer, the news stories that make me saddest are "dumped baby" stories.
Sometimes they are still-born, sometimes they are not. Sometimes the mother leaves them to die, sometimes she leaves them on a church doorstep. (And I'm only talking about the cases that make the news!) In this case the mother of four didn't even check to see whether the baby was alive before wrapping it up. In this case an abortion might have saved the woman from another pregnancy (increasingly dangerous the more babies you have) and a traumatic experience in a hotel toilet. It might have even saved her marriage and kept the other four children from a broken home.
Having said that, I should probably say one thing in favour of the mother. After my experience with my son's eye last month, I'm a great believer in the gut instincts of women when it comes to their children. My punt is, that the baby was indeed stillborn and the dumping was the action of a severely distressed post-partum mother.
We shall see I suppose.
Update: 24/5/2008
The case has now been referred to the coroner. It seems the baby may have been still born after all.
